Is Bleeding During Sex a Possibility with Mirena?

When the Mirena IUD first became available, it was marketed to women as a birth control device they would not have to think about. Couples who have children could enjoy spontaneous intimacy again, without the worry of pregnancy. Unfortunately, Mirena has had a number of adverse effects on many women, and some are wondering whether bleeding during sex is one of those side effects.

The Mirena IUD is Most Likely Not the Cause of Bleeding During Sex

While there are some instances where bleeding can occur when a woman has been implanted with a Mirena IUD, bleeding during sex is generally not one of them.

According to the Mirena Web site, which is maintained by Bayer, the manufacturer of the device, bleeding after implantation of a Mirena IUD can occur as the body gets used to the hormone released by the device. Mirena contains the synthetic hormone, levenorgestrel, which is similar to the hormone used in birth control pills. Many women will experience breakthrough bleeding while on the pill, and some women have reported this symptom with Mirena. In fact, women who experience heavy, problematic periods are often encouraged to try Mirena, because it has been known to lighten periods, and in some cases stop them completely.

Bleeding during sex when the Mirena IUD is in its proper position could be an indication that something else is wrong. If this does happen, it should be brought to the attention of a physician immediately. A woman and her partner should not be aware of Mirena at any time during sexual intercourse.
